Mexico US border: Drug tunnel connecting Tijuana to San Diego discovered by police - TomoNews

A drug tunnel was discovered on Tuesday beneath the US - Mexico border, San Diego 6 reported.

US federal officers were patrolling near the San Ysidro Port of Entry fence when they found a sinkhole in the ground. The discovery led them to an underground tunnel that connected the northern edge of the Mexican city of Tijuana with the south end of San Diego.

According to El Pais, the tunnel, which was destroyed the day after its discovery, had a single entry inside a home in Tijuana and was about 220 yards long and 60 feet deep.

Tall enough for a person to walk through, the tunnel was still under construction but already fitted with reinforced walls, electric lighting and a cart-and-rail cargo-hauling system.

This kind of tunnel underneath the border between the US and Mexico isn’t uncommon and is usually used for drugs or people’s smuggling. Since 2006, US authorities have found more than 80 smuggling tunnels.
