Homeless college student biked 50 miles to school, public raises $184K for him - TomoNews

BARNESVILLE, GEORGIA — A GoFundMe page that was created to help a homeless college student in Georgia raised at least $184,000 after the story of how he biked 50 miles in six hours in order to register for fall classes went public.
Fred Barley, 19, a biology student at Gordon State University, biked all the way from Conyers to Barnesville to make sure he would register for his fall semester on time, reported FOX5 Atlanta.
With no place to stay, Barley decided to camp out in the college campus, but he was soon discovered by two police officers while they were out on patrol. One of the officers, Dicky Carreker, decided to sponsor the homeless student and took money out of his own pocket to let Barley stay at a local motel for two nights.
Not long after, a local resident named Casey Blaney decided to set up a GoFundMe page called Success For Fred to raise funds for Barley. The campaign soon received a staggering $184,000 in donations from across the country. Barley was also offered a job at a local pizzeria called DB’s Pizzeria by owner Debra Adamson.
To show his appreciation, Barley recorded a message to tell everyone that he vows to work hard to graduate and become a doctor in order help others in need. He added that some of the gifts he received weren’t as important as the friends he has made.
