Malaysia Born Refugee - Birth of a Refugee

Malaysia is not a signatory of the 1951 Refugee Convention nor the 1967 Protocol, which protect refugees' rights in their asylum country. Consequently, Malaysia does not recognise the term "refugees" and thus, does not recognise their rights as stated in the 1951 Refugee Convention.

Malaysia is host to 149,500 refugees and asylum seekers, of whom 56,458 are Rohingya The earliest Rohingya refugees arrived in the country in the mid-1980s, fleeing then Burma. After 30 years, the third generation of Rohingyas lives here, including Zainab and her newborn baby. Both were born here.
