The growth in popularity of Snapchat over the past four years has been both dramatic and highly noticeable, but one thing it hasn’t been is particularly surprising. The social media tool is uniquely suited to meet and needs of its young and digitally savvy target market. The app has captured no shortage of interesting and compelling events, moments and happenings that would have simply been represented through incredulous anecdotes met with skepticism in previous generations. Amidst a sea of inane, silly filtered photos of users sporting cartoon-y dog faces while vomiting rainbows, some snaps actually bring the user in and offer them access to something they wouldn’t otherwise get to see. Even presidential nominee Bernie Sanders has seen enough value in Snapchat to use it as a key tool as part of his campaign.
While certain photo snaps can elicit a laugh or at least bring a smile when accompanied by the right caption, it is the videos and Snapchat Stories – that is, collections of snaps put together through the app to form one over-reaching narrative – that add another layer of depth to shared posts. Earlier this year, one Snapchat user in attendance at President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address used the story function to infuse the address with pics of the First Dogs, Sunny and Bo, and other happenings from the event not caught on TV.
