Vladimir Putin has reportedly said that he considers Russia’s military to be “stronger...than any potential aggressor.”
According to the Russian news agency TASS, he made these comments at a recent meeting of the country’s Defense Ministry.
The media outlet quotes Putin as saying, “There is still much work to be done, but taking into account our achievements, not only military ones, but also our history, geography, the state of the Russian society - we can say with confidence that at present we are stronger than any potential aggressor.”
Sputnik reports that he further noted, “I would like to draw your attention to the fact that if we just allow ourselves to relax even for a minute, allow at least one major failure in the modernization of the army and navy, in the training of the troops, the situation may change fast.”
Over the past few years, Russia’s military has been involved in the annexation of Crimea, efforts to support Syria’s president, and drills aimed at a perceived NATO threat.
Putin has also recently spoken about the need to improve their nuclear weapons capabilities, a position which stirred more controversy when President-elect Donald Trump tweeted about American nuclear weapons soon after.
