Surge In Suicide Hotline Activity Attributed To Trump’s Victory

Services such as the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline and the Crisis Text Hotline have reported a surge of calls and messages stemming from Donald Trump’s victory in the presidential election.

The election of Donald Trump has reportedly caused a surge in calls to suicide hotlines.
According to the New York Daily News, “The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline received 660 calls between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m. Wednesday — 2½ times the average.”
The media outlet quotes the organization’s director, John Draper, as saying, “It clearly is and was an indication that there’s a lot of anxiety and fear around the election.”
The Crisis Text Line has also reported that its volume doubled on and after November 8th, with many of the incoming messages including the words “election” and “scared.”
Trump’s victory is said to have hit the LGBTQ community particularly hard, with an executive of Trans Lifeline, a service geared towards members of that group, as saying, “The Republicans have been moving further and further to the right.  For them to have the House, the Senate, and the presidency is pretty frightening for LGBT people.”
Victims of sexual assault have also reportedly been reaching out to these crisis hotlines, with Donald Trump’s past lewd remarks toward women acting as a trigger, reports the Washington Post.
