KABUL, AFGHANISTAN — Kabul police chief Abdel Rahman Rahimi confirmed the abduction of two foreigners at a prominent co-ed university in Afghanistan’s capital.

Both academics were professors at the American University of Afghanistan, reports the Sydney Morning Herald. One is an American citizen while the other is Australian.

Around 8:30 p.m on Sunday, men disguised as Afghan National Security Forces burst into the front gates of the university’s Kabul campus. The men were armed and kidnapped the two academics at gunpoint.

Authorities have yet to determine who is behind the kidnappings. The abduction comes just days after Taliban insurgents attacked a convoy of Western tourists in rural Afghanistan, calling them foreign occupiers, according to the Washington Post.
