BARI, ITALY — At least 25 people were killed and dozens injured when two passenger trains collided head-on at high speed in southern Italy on Tuesday.

According to Reuters, three carriages were torn apart by the force of the impact after the two trains ran into each other while on the same stretch of track linking the towns of Corato and Andria in the southeastern Puglia region.

Emergency services have been trying to free passengers from the shattered carriages, according to BBC.

Authorities urged blood donors to go to local hospitals, Reuters reported.

The weather was reportedly good when the crash occurred around 11:30 a.m.

Both trains were made up of four carriages. The front carriages on each train were pulverized as they slammed into each other, according to Reuters.

Officials say there was no immediate indication what had caused the accident.
