At least 42 people were killed and more than a thousand were injured in Nepal on Tuesday after a second earthquake shook the nation.

The 7.3-magnitude earthquake struck near Mount Everest, where it unleashed landslides in the Himalayan valley.

The quake’s epicenter was 83 kilometers east of Kathmandu and had a depth of just 15 kilometers. Previous reports said the depth was 19 kilometers.

According to witnesses, the quake lasted around 40 seconds. Shockwaves were felt across the country and in northern India, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Pakistan.

According to Reuters, several buildings collapsed in Chautara, about 30 miles from the epicentre.

Residents in Kathmandu rushed out of buildings and gathered in public spaces as they were too afraid to stay inside.

In India’s Bihar state, at least three people have been confirmed dead after the collapse of a building’s wall, CNN reported.

The Nepalese government is now trying to assess the damage as the country’s phone network was affected by the earthquake.

Two aftershocks of magnitudes 6.3 and 5.6 followed the first tremors.

The quake struck Nepal just weeks after another devastating earthquake killed at least 8,000 people and wounded more than 17,000 on April 25.
