Nepal earthquake: rescue teams, supplies sent to Nepal after magnitude 7.9 quake - TomoNews

Several countries have sent rescue teams and aid to Nepal following the devastating magnitude 7.9 earthquake that struck near the capital Kathmandu Saturday morning and is now known to have killed at least 3,400 people.

India sent four aircraft carrying about 300 rescuers to Nepal on Saturday. More planes were sent the next day, delivering food, medicine and rescue equipment.

China deployed a 62-member rescue team and six sniffer dogs to assist with rescue efforts. Beijing also pledged to send $3.2 million worth of tents, blankets, generators and other supplies.

Japan, meanwhile, will send a 70-member rescue team consisting of members from the National Police Agency, the Fire and Disaster Management Agency and the Japan Coast Guard.

California is sending 57 urban search and rescue workers to Nepal. The United States has put $1 million into a relief fund to address immediate needs in Nepal.

An Israeli rescue team, which consists of 260 personnel, will fly to Nepal aboard an army cargo plane and an El Al Airways plane on Monday.

Many Nepalese are sleeping outside because of fear of aftershocks. More avalanches were triggered following a magnitude 6.7 aftershock on Sunday.
