VIERNHEIM, GERMANY — An unidentified gunman was shot dead by German police after he took several people hostage at a movie theater yesterday.

The gunman, who was armed with a “rifle or long gun”, fired four shots in the air after entering the Kinopolis cinema complex in the town of Viernheim at around 3 p.m., the Telegraph reported.

One hostage told German media the gunman held 17 people captive in a bathroom, according to the Guardian.

Armed police stormed the building and fired tear gas. The gunman was shot and killed during the police operation, the Telegraph reported, citing authorities.

Police were investigating an explosive vest and hand grenade found on the suspect’s body to see if they were real.

No hostages were injured, according to authorities. Initial reports said as many as 50 people were injured, which may have been after coming into contact with tear gas, according to the Telegraph.

Police said the gunman was a “confused individual” rather than a terrorist, according to the Guardian.
