PARIS — A French police commander and his wife were stabbed to death in a Paris suburb on Monday by a neighbor who reportedly pledged allegiance to ISIS.

Witnesses told police the attacker shouted “Allahu akbar” (God is the greatest) as he repeatedly stabbed Jean-Baptiste Salvaing, 42, outside his home in Magnanville, 35 miles northwest of the French capital, the Guardian reported.

Salvaing was the assistant police chief in Les Mureaux, a nearby district, according to the Guardian.

The attacker held the policeman’s wife and 3-year-old son inside their home as police tried to negotiate, before loud detonations were heard and special forces officers stormed the building.

The attacker was shot and killed by officers, Russia Today reported, citing France TV Info. Officers discovered the policeman’s wife dead and the couple’s son unharmed, according to the Guardian.

The ISIS-linked Amaq News Agency said the so-called Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack, according to the U.S.-based Site Intelligence Group, the Guardian reported.
