Head-on train crash in Germany kills at least 10 and injures more than 80

BAD AIBLING, GERMANY — A head-on train collision in the German state of Bavaria killed at least ten people and injured dozens on Tuesday.

Two passenger trains crashed on a single-track route between Rosenheim and Holzkirchen in Germany on Tuesday, German Transport Minister Alexander Dobrindt told reporters at a news conference, according to CNN.

Authorities say the two passenger trains were carrying about 150 people and were traveling around 62 mph when they collided. An automatic braking system on the line should have halted any train that passed a stop signal, however it is unknown why this did not prevent the crash.

As both trains were travelling on a bend, officials assume neither of the drivers would have seen each other before the impact, thus the trains crashed into each other largely without braking, Dobrindt said.

Two of the three data recorders have been recovered from the site and investigators will know more once the data has been analyzed, reported CNN.

The crash killed at least ten people and injured more than 80. The trains' drivers may be among the dead, however victim identification is still in progress, CNN reported citing a statement from Transdev, the parent company of the train operator Meridian.

Investigators appear to be looking at human, technical or infrastructure errors as possible causes, rather than terrorism, reported CNN.
