NYPD officer shot in ankle after responding to massive street fight in the Bronx

NEW YORK — A New York City police officer was wounded during an exchange of gunfire with a suspect involved in a large street fight in the Bronx early Saturday.

The street fight involved dozens of people armed with bats, knives and guns took place at 3rd Avenue and East 138th Street in the Mott Haven section in the South Bronx around 2 a.m., CBS New York reported.

New York City police officer Sherrod Stuart and a partner were assigned to the plainclothes anti-crime patrol when they responded to the fight.

One of the man involved in the fight, identified as 19-year-old Christopher Rice opened fire and struck officer Stuart in the right ankle. Officer Stuart was able to return fire, hitting the suspect four times, who was later rushed to a hospital in serious condition.

Authorities said Officer Stuart's wounds are not life-threatening. The suspect, who has five prior arrests, had not been charged as of Saturday afternoon.
