TAIPEI, TAIWAN— The Obama administration notified Congress on Wednesday about an arms package worth $1.83 billion to the country of Taiwan, Reuters reported. According to the Taipei Times, the arms deal included two refurbished FFG-7 Oliver Hazard Perry-class guided missile frigates that were authorized by law for transfer a year ago with upgrade costs bringing the total to $190 million. The Taiwan military also received 36 AAV-7 Assault Amphibious Vehicles for the cost of $375 million; 13 MK 15 Phalanx Block 1B ship defense Close-in Weapon Systems, ammunition, upgrade kits, and support, costing $416 million; 250 Block I-92F MANPAD Stinger missiles, related equipment and support for $217 million; and 208 Javelin guided missiles, technical assistance, logistics and program support, for the price of $57 million, the Taipei Times reported. "The idea is to complicate China's scenarios, to make them pause, to get them to think twice before they attack," Rupert Hammond-Chambers, president of the U.S.-Taiwan Business Council told Reuters. According to Reuters, this is the first time in four years that the US administration has approved an arms sale with Taiwan. China, which has the largest military on Earth, criticized the deal, and announced they will impose sanctions on the companies involved in the sale including Lockheed Martin and Raytheon. Under the Taiwan Relations Act, the authorized military arms deal follows previous sales notifications worth over $12 billion during the Obama administration. The United States is committed to the one-China policy, but Washington is obligated to defend Taiwan in case of a military attack on the island.
