A bomb joke at school sent this 12-year-old, Sikh-American boy to jail for three days

ARLINGTON, TEXAS — Arlington, Texas middle-schooler Armaan Singh Sarai, a boy from a Sikh-American family, was jailed after a classmate accused him of bringing a bomb to school. At least, that's what Armaan's cousin claims happened in a posting on Facebook.

According to his cousin, Ginee Haer, 12-year-old Armaan just wanted to fit in. A heart condition, which required he undergo three surgeries, made it difficult for him to participate in extracurricular activities, and his classmates didn't exactly make it easy either. Especially when one reportedly accused Armaan of bringing a bomb to school last week.

In her Facebook post, Haer says that without even questioning the accusation, the principal called the police on Armaan and he was promptly arrested and sent to a juvenile detention facility. According to the post, his family never received a notification of his whereabouts and were worried sick when Armaan didn't return home that day. They were shocked to find him in a juvenile facility.

Armaan was kept behind bars for three days before he was finally released on Monday.

Police and school officials tell a story that drastically differs from Haer's claims, and say they charged Armaan with making a terrorist threat. School officials confirmed that Armaan was arrested last Friday, but added that he had told another student that his backpack was wired with a bomb. According to the Dallas Morning News, Armaan said that he would put his backpack in the restroom and "flee with people waiting outside the school for him."

When police searched Armaan's bag, they found no bomb inside, reported the Dallas Morning News. Armaan later said that he had been joking.

Aksh Singh, who claims to be Armaan's older brother, publicized an email he sent to school administration that seems to corroborate some of the official's claims. He wrote that Armaan did make a threat that was intended to be a joke, but Singh insists that other students made the same joke. According to Singh, officials had simply chosen to specifically target Armaan because he's Indian.
