LOS ANGELES — Deputies with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department on Saturday shot dead a man they say was armed with a handgun. The shooting took place at an intersection in Lynwood, south of the city's downtown area, and was captured on video by a bystander.

KLTA5 reports that around 11 a.m. on Saturday police received reports of an armed African-American man walking near Magnolia and Alpine Avenues in Lynwood. It is believed he walked east along Magnolia toward Long Beach Boulevard.

According to ABC7, witnesses reported seeing the man fire into the air near the intersection of Magnolia and Long Beach Boulevard. There, deputies confronted him and ordered him to drop the gun. Police say he refused to obey their commands. Video shows what happened next: deputies fired at the man several times causing him to all to the ground. There is an audible pause before they fire more shots at the man as he lies on the ground outside an Arco gas station.

Police say they recovered a loaded .45 calibre handgun and two bullets at the scene.

The deceased's family identified him to KLTA5 as Nicholas Robertson, a father of three.

This latest police shooting seems poised to gain national attention and further erode trust between America's Black community and the country's police forces.

On Saturday night more than a dozen people gathered at the shooting site holding signs and yelling into megaphones, "No more stolen lives!" the Los Angeles Times reported.
