An animation produced using a supercomputer climate model shows the release of carbon dioxide from biomass burning and massive urban centers.
NASA has produced an animation showing the release of carbon dioxide across the globe over the span of five days in June, 2006.
Created via the use of a supercomputer, the simulation shows two different sources for the greenhouse gas: sprawling urban centers termed "megacities" and the burning of biomass.
Megacity emissions predominate in China and the U.S.
Biomass fires can be spotted flaring up quite visibly over mid-Africa.
The model is used by NASA in order to gather broader insight into how carbon dioxide travels through Earth's atmosphere and across the planet over time.
