America needs to have a serious debate about Syrian refugees coming stateside

WASHINGTON — In the aftermath of the deadly Paris attacks last week, at least 31 governors in mostly Republican states want to stop Syrian refugees, who are trying to get away from ISIS, from entering their communities to start new lives.

These governors are saying Syrian refugees pose a security risk that must be taken into account, which also mirrors what some GOP presidential candidates are saying on the campaign trail. But immigration isn't a state-determined issue, it's a federal one.

The U.S. has only accepted a few thousand Syrian refugees in recent years, but the Obama administration has pledged to accept 10,000 by the end of 2016. Republicans in Congress are now trying to press the pause button and suspend the refugee program for Syrians.

But the majority of Syrian refugees don't even fit the terrorist profile, with half of them being children, 30 percent of them adult women and 20 percent adult men. The years-long process of obtaining refugee status involves screening by Homeland Security, the Department of Defense and the FBI.

Rather than a bunch of knee-jerk reactions, what the U.S. needs is a serious, rational debate on the actual security risks in order to develop a credible plan of action.

Great, maybe America is screwed.
