NYPD suspect suicidal beautician used chemical mixture to blow up building

NEW YORK-- Francisca Figueroa, 48, was originally thought to be one of two victims of a horrific explosion in Brooklyn on October 3 that essentially leveled a three-story building. But on Tuesday, investigators spelled out a new theory.

Cops now believe that Figueroa, who was facing eviction from her apartment, mixed flammable chemicals from her salon on the first floor of the same building, turning the chemicals into a combustible cocktail that resulted in two massive explosions on Saturday afternoon.

Authorities say Figueroa had posted suicidal thoughts online not long before the deadly blasts and a neighbor told the New York Post that the woman had been involved in a protracted legal battle over her apartment that ended in a court order to evict her.

Fire investigators initially suspected a gas leak and turned their suspicions to a stove that was reportedly improperly removed from the woman's home at an earlier time. But after it was revealed that Figueroa's gas had been shut off long before the explosions due to her not paying her gas bill, investigators began to look at other possibilities.

No reports specified what exact chemicals were used or in what mixture and authorities are continuing their investigation.

Unfortunately, Figueroa's apparent suicide not only claimed her life but also that of a 64-year-old neighbor who lived on the third floor of the same building. Over a dozen other people were injured in the blasts.

Area residents expressed shock at the suggestion Figueroa was responsible for the explosions, calling her a "kind woman who kept to herself."

Figueroa leaves behind two teenage children. Family and friends are mourning her passing and have not yet commented on what appears to be her horribly violent decision to end her life in this dramatic manner.
