Canadian startup's enviro-trackers monitor how clean the air is

SAN FRANCISCO-- TZOA, a Canada-based startup, is developing environmental-trackers for researchers and consumers to monitor air pollution.

According to studies conducted by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), "indoor levels of pollutants may be two to five times ?? and occasionally more than 100 times ? higher than outdoor pollutant levels."

In order to determine air quality, a small fan sucks air into the device and blows it across a laser. The laser then scatters the light from the particles onto a light detector. The system counts the number of particles by scanning the pulses of light. The intensity of the light helps determine if it's a big particle, such as pollen, or a small particle, such as cooking pollution.

Ambient conditions, such as temperature, humidity and UV are then viewed on a smartphone. TZOA also has a smaller consumer version that people can wear throughout the day.

Earlier this summer, TZOA's Indiegogo campaign raised more than $88,000, which is 152 percent of its original goal. The TZOA research costs $600 and its consumer version costs $139.
