No Fire Zone, The Killing Fields of Sri Lanka: Will the world continue to ignore?

In May 2009, the civil war in Sri Lanka ended.

What began in July 1983 as an insurgency, became a full-blown war between the government of Sri Lanka and the separatist Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (Tamil Tigers). 80 to 100,000 people were reported to have perished during the 27-year war.

But towards the end of the war, in the final days of a campaign by the Sri Lankan army, atrocities were alleged to have been committed against Tamil civilians and fighters.

Indeed 'trophy footage' allegedly by Sri Lankan soldiers shows summary executions and what seems to have been sexual abuse and rape of female fighters and civilians.

Macrae's films on the civil war have not been 'one-sided'. He has also put together footage of Tamil Tigers themselves committing war crimes such as suicide bombings of civilian targets, conscription of child soldiers as well as shooting at Tamil civilians trying to escape the No Fire Zones.

Callum Macrae, film-maker and journalist has been at the forefront of a campaign to bring the government of Rajapaksa to the International Court of Justice for crime against humanity.

Malaysiakini.tv spoke to Macrae about the film No Fire Zone, The Killing Fields of Sri Lanka before its screening on July 3, 2013 in Kuala Lumpur.
