Today our host Rey Gomez interviews Palestinian Foreign Minister Riad Malki, who is now in Venezuela to attend the Conference of Palestinian Ambassadors in the Americas on May 19-20. Why hold the conference in Venezuela? Because of many forms of support shown by Venezuela for Palestine over the years and the long-standing bonds between the two countries. Is Venezuela really a threat to the security of any country? The foreign minister laughs and says, “This is the best place for anyone to spend time.” Obama made a clear mistake, and it’s time for him to review his decision and retract, he continued. With the recent recognition of Palestinian statehood by the Vatican, what message is Pope Francis sending to the world? A very positive one. This is the first agreement the Vatican has signed with an Arab country and it may set a precedent. Also, Catholics have an interest in Holy Land and should know that in Palestine Christians are not persecuted as they are in some Middle Eastern countries. They are protected as an integral element of Palestinian society. What are the chances for the Security Council to take action in support of statehood? There’s no indication that the Security Council will change the way it’s acted since 1948. But we believe in multilateralism, said Malki, and trust that friendly countries like Venezuela can make a difference, by making noise and attracting attention to the issue. He explained that in multilateral agencies and organizations, Palestine is asking for the application of international law and welcomes the opportunity to face israel in international arenas, especially in the International Criminal Court, where they are pushing for an international investigation of their crimes against the Palestinian people. Why has no agreement been reached between Israel and Palestine? Israel doesn’t want it. The occupation is beneficial to them in all aspects. What could make a difference? International pressure. Without it, Israel can do anything it wants. International solidarity? It’s what keeps us alive. The Palestinian people are a people who love life and also have much to give to the world. teleSUR
