French soldier killed in Mali road accident

A French soldier stationed in Mali was killed in a road accident on July 30, the French Defence ministry said yesterday.

The accident occurred about 20 km from the town of Douentza in the center of Mali. A convoy of about 40 French army vehicles had departed Gao and were bound for the capital, Bamako.

Chief Brigadier Marc Martin-Vallet, 28, and another soldier were in a transport vehicle.For reasons still unclear, the vehicle left the road and went into a ditch. Martin-Vallet was killed and the other soldier suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Six French soldiers have been killed in Mali since the beginning of the peacekeeping operation began there in January.
