Dallas police shoot mentally-ill man, captured on surveillance video

Dallas police have shot a 52-year-old mentally-ill man and home surveillance video of the event has many questioning the justification for the shooting.

At noon on Monday, the mother of Bobby Bennett, a man who had been off his psychotic meds for several months, called the police to report that her son was upset and had a knife. She had reportedly requested help from officers experienced dealing with people with mental issues.

When the police arrived at 12:19pm at the 9452 block of Crimson Court in Dallas, they saw Bennett sitting in a swivel office chair in the middle of the cul de sac. He had his arms crossed. When the police asked him to show his hands, they claim he responded: "You all are going to need more officers out here," before walking toward the officers with a knife raised. One of the officers fired four times, hitting Bennett once.

But surveillance video taken by a neighbor is at odds with this account provided by police. In the footage, Bennett, sitting in the swivel chair, can be seen backing away as the police approach. Next, he stands up and gets fired on.

Bennett is in serious conditions and has been charged with aggravated assault to a public servant. The officer who fired the shots is now on administrative leave indefinitely.
