U.S. authorities searching for victims after a hot air balloon crash in the U.S. state of Virginia. The individuals are assumed dead after their hot air balloon caught fire and exploded.

Witnesses at a hot air balloon festival in Caroline County, Virginia, said three balloons were coming in for a landing just before 8 p.m., when one of the balloons clipped a power line and caught fire.

The pilot reportedly tried to open the balloon's top in a bid to control the fire, but the balloon instead suddenly climbed back into the air.

Spectators watched in horror as two explosions were seen; after which the balloon's basket separated from the balloon.

Three people on board are assumed to have perished, but authorities have yet to locate the crash site.

A spokesperson for the Mid-Atlantic Balloon Festival said the remainder of the festival has been cancelled.
