A Chinese noodle vendor, identified only by his surname Zhang, from northern Shaanxi was detained by police after he was caught adding opium poppy into his hot and sour noodles, a traditional local snack.
Zhang was caught after one of his customers, a man surnamed Liu, tested positive for drugs after eating noodles at Zhang’s shop, which is named Cave and located in Changcheng Town, Wuqi County.

Liu was stopped by traffic police and given routine urine test at the police station. The test turned out to be positive and Liu was detained for 15 days on charges of drug use.

Liu later asked four or five of his family members to try the same noodles from the same shop. All of them then tested positive for drugs.

After Liu’s family called the police, Zhang admitted to having added powdered poppy plant to his noodles.

Zhang said that he bought 2 kilograms of poppy pod shells for around $100 in August and began adding it to his recipe to enhance the flavor. The technique worked and soon he found lots of customers returning to his shop.

Zhang was then detained by police for 10 days.

Unfortunately for Liu, police did not drop his drug charges, saying it didn’t matter whether or not he knew he was using drugs.
