Turkey attack: Female suicide bomber hits Istanbul tourist area police station, killing one officer

A female suicide bomber detonated explosives inside a police station in a popular tourist area in Istanbul on Tuesday evening, killing a police officer.
A female assailant wearing a niqab reportedly entered a police station in Istanbul’s Sultanahmet district, a popular tourist area at around 5:00 p.m. She told two policemen at a tourist police post that she had lost her purse, according to a report by AFP. A while later, the woman detonated her explosives, killing one policeman and injuring another.
The woman’s nationality is not clear at the moment. The woman spoke in English with a thick accent, said Istanbul Governor Vasip Sahin in an interview with a local television channel. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack yet.
The attack comes after a January 1st attack during which a man threw two hand grenades at the police cabin outside the Dolmabahce Palace, which houses the prime minister’s office. The grenades did not explode and the assailant was subdued by police.
The man behind the New Year’s Day attack is reportedly linked to the leftist group DHKP-C. It is unclear whether the latest attack is related.
