Suicide bomber kills five police officers in Russia's Chechnya

A holiday in Russia's Chechnya turns into a tragedy.

Russian news agencies report that a suicide bomber killed at least five police officers and wounded 12 others.

The attack happened in front of this concert hall, where festivities were planned to celebrate Grozny's city day holiday.

Chechnya's leader, Ramzan Kadyrov:

(SOUNDBITE) (Russian) KREMLIN BACKED LEADER OF CHECHNYA, RAMZAN KADYROV, SAYING:

"The people in a joyful mood were dancing, celebrating and singing. But the devils do not like this - they were preparing, and tried to destroy our celebration."

Suicide bombings in Chechnya have been a rare occurrence in recent years under the rule of Moscow-backed leader Ramzan Kadyrov -- who's birthday falls on today's bombing.
