Russian nuclear submarine catches fire, but no weapons and reactor off

Emergency services in the north of Russia have been dealing with a fire on board a nuclear submarine.

The vessel was undergoing repairs in a dry dock in the port of Severodvinsk, in the province of Arkhangelsk.

There were no reports of any casualties

Local news agencies reported there were no weapons on board and the nuclear reactor had already been shut down for the repairs.

Some reports say the fire began during some welding work and insulation material caught alight.

The 949 Antei Oscar-class submarine, named Orel, is the sister vessel of the Kursk, which sank after a fire and explosion in 2000.

The Reuters news agency also says a similar blaze on board a submarine carrying weapons almost led to a nuclear disaster in 2011.
