Istanbul hostage crisis ends in deadly shootout

Turkish police say two gunmen holding a prosecutor hostage at a courthouse in Istanbul have been killed and the captive critically injured.

Security forces stormed the building where a far-left group had taken the hostage, after gunshots were heard.

The prosecutor was said to be undergoing surgery and fighting for his life. Earlier, the Revolutionary People’s Liberation Party-Front (DHKP-C) had threatened to kill him unless its demands were met.

The prosecutor is leading a probe into the death of teenager Berkin Elvan, who was injured during anti-government protests in 2013 and later died.

The DHKP-C had said on its website that it wanted the police officer it blames for Elvan’s death to confess on television, officers to be tried in “people’s courts” and charges against those who attended protests for Elvan to be dropped.
