Pakistani military says it kills more than 60 militants in various clashes

Pakistani paramilitary soldiers on the outskirts of Karachi.

It's just after an exchange of gunfire that left four suspected militants dead ... including a local commander of the Pakistani Taliban, military officials say.

A government statement said the militants opened fire on the soldiers and hurled grenades.

The soldiers fired back, and later recovered weapons from the militants' hideout.

The Pakistani army killed nearly 60 other militants in one day ... during an overnight ambush near the Afghan border, as well as other, more minor, clashes.

Until now, Pakistan has been distinguishing between militant groups -- the ones that are 'bad' and the ones that might be 'useful' to Pakistan's aims in neighboring Afghanistan.

But four days after a Taliban massacre left scores of school children dead, the government has vowed to stop discriminating between the different militant factions.
