At least 12 people were killed and another 45 injured when two passenger trains crashed in northern Indian Tuesday night.

The collision took place around 11.15 pm local time in Uttar Pradesh.

The death toll has been rising as rescuers worked through the night.

Over 300 railway staff, along with police and civilians, are helping in the rescue operation.

India's rail services are known for their poor safety record, something Prime Minister Narendra Modi has vowed to fix.

Officials say compensation to victims' family has already been provided.
