A 28-year-old mother in Oceanside, California has been arrested for allegedly drowning her young son. On Friday, Veronica Rivas was booked and is now facing a charge of first-degree murder pertaining to the death of her 22-month-old son named Elijah.

Prior to her arrest, police were dispatched to her home on Wednesday. Elijah’s grandmother had called 911 after finding the boy unresponsive.

Rivas had been in the apartment and was located unconscious in a room downstairs. She was transported to a local medical center for treatment.

First responders immediately gave the child CPR, but Elijah could not be revived. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The following day, police announced the case was being treated as a homicide. When investigators interviewed Rivas, she reportedly confessed to drowning the toddler.

The boy’s nanny said Rivas had been in the midst of a custody battle for the past two months with Elijah’s father. Rivas was said to be very depressed over the strained relationship.

It’s unclear if Rivas had attempted suicide around the time her son was killed. The investigation into the case is ongoing.
