Blast kills leader and other top commanders of Syrian Islamist group

The leader of Ahrar al-Sham which is one of Syria’s most powerful insurgent groups has been killed in an explosion.

Hassan Abboud died along with 28 of the group’s top commanders at a meeting in the northwestern town of Ram Hamdan near the city of Idlib.

Human Rights watch reports that around 50 people died in the reported suicide bomb attack.

Ahrar al-Sham are hardline Islamists and one of the biggest rebel groups fighting the government of President Bashar al-Assad.

It has often clashed with Islamic State or ISIL as its sometimes called, which is the group responsible for seizing territory in Syria and Iraq.

Hassan Abboud has in the past denounced
ISIL militants whom analysts believe are most likely responsible for his death.
