Nigerian Islamists kill at least 12 in village attacks, witnesses say

Bullet holes and burned out buildings are all that remain in villages of Nigeria's Adamawa state.

An overnight assault by gunmen from the Islamist group Boko Haram kills at least 12 people.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) ADAMAWA RESIDENT MOSES ISA SAYING:

"Shooting, shooting bombs, shootings, too much shootings, so even people run to the mountains. They don't know where. They are displaced."

Residents said the gunmen burned churches, houses, shops and more.

Boko Haram, which is fighting for an Islamic state in northern Nigeria, is increasingly attacking civilians.

One man said his brother was killed.
