Witnesses say Boko Haram kills at least 51 in Nigeria

At least 51 people have been killed in an attack by gunmen from the Islamic Boko Haram sect here in northeastern Nigeria, witnesses say.

Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan's government is having difficulty containing the insurgency in this region.

Bodies upon bodies are carried through the smoldering in streets, and buildings are left charred.

This is the aftermath of what an attack by fighters who sped along these roads on Tuesday afternoon with automatic weapons and explosives.

They stormed the local government area of Konduga in the Borno state in the northeastern part of the country.

The military has confirmed the attack took place, but has not released a total number of casualties. One teacher said the insurgents took 20 young girls.

Nigeria is a country split almost equally between Christians and Muslims.
