Israel launches air strikes in retaliation to rocket fire

Israel has carried out air strikes in Gaza, after it said three rockets were fired from the coastal enclave, breaking a short-lived extension to a ceasefire agreed last night.

Footage from AP news agency appeared to show a smoke stream from a rocket billowing out above the Zeitoun area of Gaza.

Israel has withdrawn its negotiators from Egypt. Mediators had hoped the ceasefire extension would buy time to find agreement between the two sides for a permanent truce.

So far there have been no claims of responsibility for the reported rocket fire by any Palestinian factions in Gaza.
