Gaza truce over: Israel launches strikes in retaliation to rocket fire

Israel has carried out air strikes in Gaza after it said three rockets were fired from the coastal enclave, breaking a short-lived extension to a ceasefire agreed last night.

Officials announced that ‘terror targets’ were hit after rockets were fired towards the Israeli towns of Beersheba and Netivot.

“This is the eleventh ceasefire that Hamas has either rejected or violated,” said Israeli government spokesman, Mark Regev, “and it’s clear that a ceasefire has to be a two-way street.”

Israel repeatedly stated it would not negotiate under fire and has withdrawn its representatives from Egypt. Mediators had hoped the ceasefire extension would buy time to find an agreement between the two sides for a permanent truce.

So far there have been no claims of responsibility for the reported rocket fire by any Palestinian factions in Gaza.
