Those who were out and about in Clinton, Massachusetts on Saturday may have witnessed a terrifying ordeal. A hot air balloon filled with six people crashed into power lines.

What followed was an explosion, complete with sparks and smoke. One of the ground-based witnesses described the crash stating “A big flash of red right in front of you and then another one a couple seconds afterwards. I've never seen anything like it and I'm still shaken from it.”

The incident occurred at a little after 7:30 when the balloon was coming in for a landing. Five riders were injured as a result.

They all suffered from either minor or serious burns according to a local firefighter. Everyone is thankful they’re alive, as witnesses initially thought there was no way the riders could have survived the crash.

The Federal Aviation Administration has launched an investigation into the incident. The explosion caused many nearby homes to lose power.

About 600 National Grid customers were without electricity, but most were restored quickly. Approximately 3 hours after the incident, only 80 locals were left in the dark.
