A three metre tall mammoth skeleton by Damian Hirst sold for 11 millions Euros at the annual amfAR auction at the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc just outside Cannes on Thursday (May 22).

It was used in 'Gone but Not Forgotten', part of Hirst's 'Natural History' series which the artist began in the early 1990s.

Hosted by amfAR Global Fundraising Chairwoman Sharon Stone the live auction is part of one of the most glamorous nights in the Cannes Film Festival calendar.

Raising money for AIDS research the event drew A listers including Leonardo DiCaprio. Marion Cotillard and Gael Garcia Bernal and raised a record total of $38 million.
