UN alarmed by human rights abuses in south east Ukraine as Poland lends Kyiv support

Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski is in Kyiv to discuss the upcoming presidential election in Ukraine set for May 25th.

He will remain in the capital to celebrate Europe Day on May 17.

The crisis in the south east of the country has dominated talks.

The UN, meanwhile, has warned of a “deterioration” in human rights in Donetsk and Luhansk as well as evidence of persecution of ethnic Tatars in Crimea.

Sporadic clashes broke out overnight between pro-Russian militia and Ukranian government forces in the town of Slovyansk..

United Nations monitors in the south east say the incidents of targeted killings are on the rise and cases of abduction and torture reported.

The UN believes that forces are at work to deliberately tear Ukraine apart.
