29 killed in northeastern Thailand as bus plunges in deep ravine

Twenty-nine people died in a bus crash in northeastern Thailand early on Friday.
The bus was carrying 40 passengers to the northern province of Chiang Rai. The bus rammed into a guardrail as it crossed the Khun Pha Muang bridge in Lom Sak district of Phetchabun province and fell into a 30-metre deep ravine.
An eyewitness said the bus was traveling at high speed before plunging into the ravine, and the police said they suspected the driver had fallen asleep.
According to local newspaper Matichon, more than 200 soldiers were sent out to assist the survivors and retrieve the bodies of the victims. However, the rescue mission proved to be difficult as rescuers had to use ropes to deliver equipment down to the bottom of the deep chasm.
AFP reported that 28 bodies were found in the ravine, and another person died at the hospital. Four others were severely injured.
Thailand is no stranger to fatal traffic accidents. A similar incident in October saw a bus carrying Buddhist worshippers to a temple in Lampang fall into a ravine, killing more than 20 people.
The World Health Organization put Thailand's number of road deaths at 38.1 per 100,000 of population, more than double the average of Southeast Asia as a whole.
