At least 14 people were killed when a tourist bus plunged into a deep ravine in the Philippines on Friday.

The bus was carrying 47 passengers around 7:20 a.m. and was travelling on a narrow road up a mountain in Bontoc, a municipality in northern Philippines, when it suddenly veered off and fell into a 500-m deep ravine.

The accident resulted in at least 14 deaths and 31 injuries. A Canadian and a Dutch national were among the dead. Most of the passengers were tourists, but some were on their way to attend a women's Christian conference in Bontoc.

An investigation is underway, but authorities suspected that the accident was caused by human error or mechanical failure, as there was no traffic and the weather was clear.

Local social news network Rappler reported that the tourist bus was operated by GV Florida Transport and had departed from Sampaloc terminal in Manila. It takes about 12 hours to travel to Bontoc from the capital by bus.

Crashes involving buses are commonplace in the Philippines, with many of the vehicles involved poorly maintained. In December last year, a bus fell off an elevated highway in the capital, killing at least 17 and injuring 16.
