China: Bo Xilai's appeal rejected as court upholds life sentence

A court in China has rejected the appeal of former politician Bo Xiali and upheld his life sentence.

Bo was convicted in September of bribery, embezzlement and abuse of power.

The former Chongqing Communist Party leader was ousted from his position in 2012 in a scandal which led to his wife being convicted of the murder of a British businessman.

Many in China expected Bo’s appeal to fail as the courts are under the control of the ruling Communist Party.

Bo was expelled from the organisation last year.

Many of his supporters believe he is the victim of a political purge.
