China court upholds life sentence for Bo Xilai

The appeal was brief and held no surprises.

This court in eastern China rejected the appeal of former politician Bo Xilai and upheld his life sentence.

Once the Chongqing Communist Party leader, Bo appeared in court in handcuffs with a slight smile.

(SOUNDBITE) (Mandarin) HOU JIANJUN, SPOKESMAN FOR THE SHANDONG PROVINCE HIGHER PEOPLE'S COURT, SAYING:

"The grounds of the appeal raised by Bo Xilai and his counsel have no factual and legal basis, therefore do not stand. According to relevant terms in the Criminal Procedure Law of the People's Republic of China, (the Shandong province Higher People's Court) upholds the original verdict and rejects his appeal."

Bo was a rising star in China's leadership but was jailed for life in September after a dramatic fall from grace.

His career was stopped short last year when his wife was convicted of poisoning a British businessman.
