Australian election 2013: What is a refugee?

The 2013 Australian election will see Kevin Rudd and the Labor Party pitted against Tony "puts his foot in his mouth" Abbott and the Liberal Party. One of the biggest election issues will be Australia's immigration policy and how illegal immigrants and boat people are handled.

People smuggling makes all Australians feel uncomfortable, but media manipulation has led to a lot of refugee and asylum-seeking myths being spread through Rupert Murdoch's and Fairfax media.

So just what is a refugee? What is an asylum seeker? What is a boat person?
Are boat people illegal immigrants? Are illegal immigrants flooding Australia?
Most Australian's remember the Tampa Crisis under the Howard Government's asylum seeker policies. The "Children Overboard" scandal was a black mark on Australia for years.

Now, with refugees being taken to Papua New Guinea and being banned from coming to Australia, the Australian Government's policy has become murky at best and illegal at worst.

According to the U.N.'s international treaties, a refugee is a person unwilling or unable to return to their homeland because they have faced or fear facing persecution due to their race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group, or political views.

This is different from an economic migrant, which is someone wanting to move countries to improve their situation in life.
