Japan election: Shinzo Abe has returned the LDP after winning around 300 seats in the 480-member parliament. Japan once had high hopes for the Democratic Party of Japan and prime minister Yoshihiko Noda. But after failing to boost the economy, the conservative Liberal Democratic Party saw its opportunity to regain power.

It's not that voters were eager for leadership under Shinzo Abe, who has been prime minister before. It's that Noda sucked so badly in comparison. Noda was perceived as weak on foreign policy. Voters were also unhappy he proposed increasing the sales tax to lower the budget deficit.

With few alternatives, voters were left with Abe's inflationary currency and economic policies and a hawkish foreign policy.
