Legislators in Grenada have decided it’s time to make individuals accountable for their social media postings. Extremely bad behavior is now punishable by fines and even jail time.

The law uses the specific language “offensive online comments’ and the definition of offensive remains vague.

It’s believed that the primary targets of the legislation are posters and tweeters who use the platforms to slander individuals and companies.

Those who’ve been offended will now file a complaint with the police and ultimately a judge will decide if they’re overreacting or if what was said really is troubling.

Also to be determined is how bad the comment is and what the appropriate punishment will be.

The maximum fine is 37 thousand dollars and jail time can run up to 3 years.

Grenada is the first Caribbean country to enact this specific social media governance, but neighboring countries have instituted other limits on its use.

Recently it was announced in The Bahamas that people posting “lewd’ or “obscene” pictures would be subject to police charges.
