New York woman could spend a year in jail just for tagging her former in-law on Facebook

WESTCHESTER, NEW YORK — A New York woman could spend as long as a year in jail simply for tagging someone on Facebook, according to a Fox News report.

A Westchester County Supreme Court Justice slapped Maria Gonzalez with a second-degree criminal contempt charge after Gonzalez tagged her former sister-in-law in a Facebook post in which she called her "stupid".

Following her divorce from Rafael Calderon, Maria was prohibited from contacting her former husband's sister, Maribel.

The Facebook post apparently represented a violation of said restraining order.

"The order of protection prohibited the defendant from contacting the protected party by electronic or any other means," wrote Justice Susan Capeci, according to Fox News.

While Gonzalez initially tried to argue that she felt the post was kosher, her lawyer, Kim Frohlinger, said she wouldn't appeal the ruling, according to a New York Post report.
